Carving Gold
Monika Gałaj's solo exhibition at Pracownia Portretu is a story of love for gold, presented in a bittersweet pill. Following the artist, we encounter surprising tales where this precious metal takes center stage.
For many years after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, the artist worked in conservation and restoration of historical monuments. In her professional practice, she frequently used materials that most people associate with luxury and glamour. With meticulous care, she applied thin gold leaf, restoring the forgotten and faded brilliance of objects. However, Monika Gałaj is, above all, a painter and also a creator of film set designs. In the works presented at the exhibition, she combines her past and present passions and pursuits.
Through her art, the artist tells stories echoing the heritage of European painting. Art where the use of gold as a unique material not only signified the wealth of a patron but also carried a profound message from the creator—what I paint reflects the highest values. Thus, in her paintings, we encounter inspirations drawn from works by Sandro Botticelli, José de Ribera, and Leonora Carrington. Other pieces explore how gold has captivated human minds through the centuries. The artist places nuggets of this precious metal at the heart of large canvases, emphasizing their importance both compositionally and ideologically. These paintings are not mere depictions of the metal's form; behind the layers of paint lie hopes, greed, and the mania of wealth born during the so-called "gold rush."
The exhibition also does not shy away from somber undertones. One canvas is dedicated to the story of the people of French Guiana, who, forced by colonial powers into exhausting labor in gold mines, ultimately depleted their lands without benefiting in any way from the wealth gold could bring.
We invite everyone who suspects they might harbor a fascination for this extraordinary material. Come to Monika Gałaj's exhibition at Pracownia Portretu and find out for yourself whether its allure affects you or if you're immune to its charm.
